How Does Lip Filler Work?
How Does Lip Filler Work?
Have you thought about getting lip filler but are unsure about how it works? Don’t worry, it’s completely normal and we are here to help. Here at iThriveBeauty in La Jolla, our focus is to always educate our patients before injecting.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 2.6 million people get filler treatment each year in the United States. As popular as it is, many patients may not be educated on how lip filler works before speaking with an injector.
Before you book your appointment, it’s important to understand how lip filler works:
What Are The Different Types Of Lip Filler?
The purpose of lip filler is to give volume to the lips. Lip fillers consist of synthetic Hyaluronic Acid, a natural substance that already exists in your body. There are different brands of filler such as Restylane, Juvederm, RHA Collection. It’s important to speak with our providers to learn what they suggest for you. Choosing the type of filler used will depend on your face shape and the results you want.

What Happens Before Your Lip Filler Procedure?
Before your lip filler appointment, you will speak with a provider and they will ask a series of questions before injecting. They will ask things like:
- Have you ever had lip filler before?
- What are your expectations?
- What results are you looking for?
- Do you have any allergies?
- Are you pregnant or breastfeeding?
These questions will help our nurses get a better idea of your mental and physical health before the procedure to help them to see if you are a good candidate.
What Happens During Your Lip Filler Procedure?
This is the moment you have been waiting for! Once it is time for your lip filler appointment, it is time to numb the area of treatment. Here at iThriveBeauty, we use a numbing cream to help you feel more comfortable during the procedure. Because the lips can be a very sensitive area, it's important to let the numbing solution sit for at least 20 minutes before injecting. Once the numbing solution has taken effect, your nurse will start the injections.
Many filler products on the market, like Hyaluronic Acid fillers, also contain lidocaine. Lidocaine is a mild anesthetic intended to help minimize discomfort during and after your treatment. In most cases, our nurses will provide you with a distraction device for you to hold such as a stress ball or vibration tool. As the filler is being injected it is creating beautiful volume in the areas of placement.
What happens After My Lip Filler Treatment?
After your lip filler procedure, you will experience some swelling and possible bruising- which is normal! The area of injection will be a bit sensitive to the touch for a few days. It is possible that one side might swell more than the other, so do not be alarmed as swelling will go down fully 7-14 days after the procedure.
Do not work out 24 hours after your procedure and do not get facials 2 weeks after treatment. Being patient during the healing process is key, beautiful results take time but are so worth the wait!
It’s important to not drink alcohol 24 hours before the procedure to prevent excess bleeding and bruising. Additionally, avoid taking blood thinner medication 7-10 days prior to appointment such as ibuprofen, fish oil, and other blood-thinning supplements.
